Tallapoosa Set to Ring in 2027 with the Annual Possum Drop Celebration TALLAPOOSA, GA.


Planning is underway for one of Georgia’s most beloved New Year’s Eve traditions as Tallapoosa prepares to host another unforgettable Possum Drop Celebration on Saturday, December 31, 2026, in historic downtown Tallapoosa.


This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever as visitors from near and far “Ring in 2027” with an evening filled with live music, dancing, fireworks, family fun, and the famous midnight descent of Spencer, Tallapoosa’s honorary possum and star of the show!


Star-Studded Musical Lineup Headlining the celebration is “A Foreigners Journey to Boston,” a high-energy tribute band performing the greatest hits from three of rock’s most legendary groups — Foreigner, Journey, and Boston. Fans can expect powerhouse vocals, soaring guitar solos, and a nostalgic playlist that captures the arena rock spirit of the late ’70s and ’80s with favorites everyone knows and loves.


Opening the night will be Smokey Jones and The 3 Dollar Pistols, bringing smooth harmonies, steel guitars, and all your favorite Classic Country hits from artists like Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and George Jones. Their toe-tapping energy and timeless sound have made them crowd favorites across the Southeast.


Family Fun, Food, and Fireworks The Kids Zone returns this year with carnival rides, games, and entertainment for all ages — plus the special “Early Drop” at 9:00 PM, complete with its own round of fireworks to delight younger guests before bedtime. A wide variety of food trucks and vendors will serve up everything from fair favorites to local specialties, making this one of the tastiest nights of the year to be in Tallapoosa.


Celebrating Milestones This year marks the 10th anniversary of beloved host and emcee George Franco, whose warmth and humor have become an enduring highlight of the event.

Also celebrated will be Danny Welch’s 17th year as organizer of the Possum Drop. Since beginning the event in 2010, Welch’s leadership has transformed it into a nationally recognized New Year’s celebration, earning Tallapoosa recognition among the Top NYE Destinations in the nation.

Tallapoosa Gears Up for the Iconic Possum Drop New Year's Eve Celebration: December 31, 2025 Tallapoosa, GA —


August 11, 2025 — West Georgia’s most anticipated New Year’s Eve event, The Possum Drop, returns to downtown Tallapoosa on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.


Recognized as one of the nation’s top New Year’s Eve celebrations, this family-friendly festival promises an unforgettable night filled with music, thrills, and tradition for all ages.


Event Highlights:

Kids Zone & Early Drop: Younger revelers can enjoy the dedicated Kids Zone, highlighted by a giant 100 FT Ferris Wheel and a host of classic carnival rides. The festivities include an Early Drop at 9PM, complete with a spectacular fireworks show so families with children don’t miss out on the excitement.


Live Entertainment:

The night kicks off with Atlanta’s own SkynFolks—The Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Band, delivering authentic Southern rock classics to get the celebration started. Headlining this year are The M-80s from Birmingham, AL, renowned for their high-energy performances and explosive 80s rock hits, guaranteed to keep the crowd dancing through the countdown.


Signature Midnight Countdown:

At midnight, join thousands of revelers as “Spencer” the famous (stuffed) possum is lowered from atop a downtown landmark. The moment is capped with an impressive fireworks display that lights up the West Georgia sky.


The Possum Drop is more than just a New Year’s countdown—it’s a blend of county fair fun, small town tradition, and world-class live music. Additional event features include food trucks, local vendors, games, and hospitality spaces for adults and families.

Tallapoosa, Georgia to Host Largest Possum Drop New Year's Eve Celebration Yet



TALLAPOOSA, GA - The city of Tallapoosa is gearing up for its most spectacular Possum Drop New Year's Eve Celebration to date on December 31, 2024. This unique event, which has become one of the largest New Year's Eve celebrations in Georgia, promises an unforgettable night of music, entertainment, and community spirit.

The festivities will kick off at 6:00 PM and continue until midnight, featuring live performances by "Landslide," a tribute to Fleetwood Mac and "On The Border"-The Ultimate Eagles Tribute Band. As the clock strikes midnight, the crowd will witness the lowering of "Spencer," the famous taxidermied possum, from atop the historic Cain Law Office Building, built in 1891.

This year's event is expected to draw over 15,000 attendees from around the world, cementing its status as a major regional celebration. Visitors can enjoy a variety of food trucks, vendors, and a special VIP tent for those seeking a more exclusive experience.
